Zhetysay is the administrative centre of Maktaaral District, in the far south of Kazakhstan near the border with Uzbekistan. From above it is a compact grid of streets surrounded by irrigated farmland. Canals and field boundaries stretch across the flat land in every direction.
The district lies on the Hungry Steppe, a region that was turned into farmland through large irrigation projects. It is one of Kazakhstan's main cotton-growing areas, and the town's economy is built around agriculture. Its streets are wide and low-rise, with the regularity you would expect from a planned settlement.
