Zhmerynka owes its existence to the railway. It grew in the second half of the nineteenth century when lines crossing Podillia met here, and it remains one of the important junctions of central Ukraine. From above, the tracks are the dominant feature: a broad band of parallel lines and sidings cutting across the town and dividing its neighbourhoods.
The station building, completed in the early twentieth century, is one of the most recognisable railway buildings in Ukraine, and the streets nearby form the town's most regular part. Further out, the grid loosens into private houses and gardens, with small ponds and streams among the fields of the Vinnytsia countryside.
