Zvenigorod lies west of Moscow, on the Moskva River, where the river winds through wooded, hilly country. On a map, the river is a strong curving line along the edge of the town, while the streets climb and bend across the higher ground. Forest surrounds much of the area, leaving the town as an irregular shape in a green, largely undeveloped setting.
The town is one of the oldest in the Moscow region. It was first mentioned in the fourteenth century, when it was the seat of a small principality. Its historic core, known as Gorodok, stands on a hill above the river and holds the Assumption Cathedral, a white-stone church from the early fifteenth century and one of the earliest surviving examples of Moscow architecture.
A little to the west stands the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, founded around 1398 on a hill above the Moskva. The rolling landscape has earned the area the nickname Russian Switzerland.
