Ankang lies in the far south of Shaanxi province, on the upper Han River. Mountains close in on both sides: the Qinling range to the north and the Daba Mountains to the south. The city has had to fit itself into the narrow valley floor, so from above it stretches along the river in a long band rather than spreading outward.
The Han River has always shaped life here, and also threatened it. In 1983 a severe flood inundated much of the old city, and afterwards strong flood defences were built along the riverbank. The older town lies on the southern side of the river, with newer districts developing on the opposite bank and several bridges joining the two.
Beyond the city, the valley walls rise quickly, and roads and railways follow the river or tunnel through the hills. An Ankang map poster shows a city defined by its terrain: a ribbon of streets on either side of a broad river, bounded by steep slopes that turn into blank space on the page.

River bridges
Several bridges span the Han, linking the two halves of the city. On the map they appear as short, firm lines that give the long composition a regular rhythm.
Mountain edges
The Qinling and Daba ranges rise on either side of the valley. Where the slopes begin, the street network stops abruptly, leaving clear edges around the urban band.
