Gemlik sits at the eastern end of the Gulf of Gemlik, an inlet of the Sea of Marmara, north of Bursa. The coastline curves around the town, and the map follows it: a waterfront road along the shore, a compact centre behind it and residential districts climbing into the hills. Port facilities and industrial sites extend along the coast.
The town stands on or near the site of ancient Kios, a Greek colony, and its long history as a harbour continues today through a busy commercial port. Gemlik is also known throughout Turkey for its olives. The Gemlik variety, a small black table olive, is grown on the slopes all around the gulf.
A Gemlik map poster balances water and land. The curving shoreline and the open gulf take up part of the frame, the dense town fills the flat ground by the sea, and the streets thin out as they climb into the olive-covered hills.

Port and quays
Commercial port facilities extend along the coast beside the town, their long piers and quays standing out against the open water.
Olive slopes
Hills rise behind the town, and the streets thin into winding roads through the olive groves that give Gemlik its name in Turkish kitchens.
