Lalmonirhat is the headquarters of a district in Rangpur Division, in the far north of Bangladesh close to the border with India. The land is flat, low and crossed by rivers, in the country between the Teesta and the Dharla. On a map, the town is a compact cluster of streets set among fields, ponds and small villages.

It is the headquarters of one of Bangladesh Railway's divisions, and the station, yards and staff colonies take up a noticeable share of the map, with tracks leaving in several directions.
