Luzern stands where Lake Lucerne narrows and drains into the Reuss, and that meeting of lake and river defines the city's plan. The old town sits on the north bank, the newer centre around the railway station on the south, and a series of bridges ties them together. Beyond, the lake spreads out in long arms between steep mountain shores.
The Kapellbrücke, a covered wooden footbridge with its stone Wasserturm, crosses the river at an angle, and further downstream the Spreuerbrücke does the same.
