Qingdao sits on the southern tip of a peninsula that nearly closes off Jiaozhou Bay, so on a map the city is framed by water on three sides. The western shore faces the sheltered bay and its container ports, while the southern edge meets the open Yellow Sea in a run of small coves, headlands and sandy beaches that locals still refer to by number.
The oldest quarter, near Zhanqiao Pier, keeps the irregular street pattern laid out during the German concession between 1898 and 1914. The Tsingtao Brewery, founded in 1903, stands a short distance inland from the old waterfront.
