San Miniato sits on a ridge roughly halfway between Pisa and Florence, overlooking the lower Arno valley. The old town follows the crest of the hill, so from above its streets form a long, narrow line of buildings rather than a round centre. Below, newer districts spread across the flat valley floor, including San Miniato Basso near the river.
The town's highest point is marked by a tower tied to the medieval fortress associated with Emperor Frederick II, visible for miles across the valley.
