Tipasa lies on the Mediterranean coast of Algeria, west of Algiers. It is best known for the ruins of the ancient Roman town beside it, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. On a map, the modern town gathers around a small harbour, and the archaeological park stretches along the rocky headlands on either side. There, olive trees and old stones run down to the water.
To the west rises Mount Chenoua, a mass of high ground that falls steeply to the sea. Inland, on a hill near the coast, stands the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania, a large circular tomb from antiquity. Albert Camus wrote about the place in his essays on Tipasa, and those texts are still linked with its ruins and coast.
