Ajax sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario, in Durham Region, and its southern edge is almost entirely waterfront. The shoreline here is lined with parkland and a long waterfront trail, so the map shows a calm, continuous edge where the suburban streets stop short of the lake and give way to open green space.
The town takes its name from HMS Ajax, a Royal Navy cruiser that fought at the Battle of the River Plate in 1939. Ajax grew around a wartime munitions plant, and many of its streets are named after members of the ship's crew, a tribute that makes the street names on an Ajax map poster unusually meaningful.
Highway 401 cuts across the town from east to west, separating the lakeside neighbourhoods from the newer subdivisions to the north. Creek valleys, including Duffins Creek, run south towards the lake, carving green, wooded corridors through the residential grid and giving the map its gentle, natural divisions.
