Ālbū Kamāl lies in eastern Syria, on the right bank of the Euphrates, close to the border with Iraq. From above, the map is shaped by a sharp contrast: the river and its strip of irrigated fields on one side, and the dry, open plateau on the other. The town fills the land between them in a fairly regular pattern of streets.
The Euphrates is the defining feature. It bends past the town with islands and side channels, and a narrow green band of farmland follows it, visible as finely divided plots. Main roads run parallel to the river, connecting Ālbū Kamāl with Deir ez-Zor upstream and with the Iraqi town of Al-Qa'im just across the border.
The area has been settled since ancient times. The ruins of Mari, a major Bronze Age city, lie a short distance upstream, and the ancient site of Dura-Europos is further up the river.
