Arawa lies on the east coast of Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea, on low ground between the sea and the steep, forested mountains of the interior. The town was built around the turn of the 1970s as a planned settlement serving the Panguna copper mine in the hills above, and its street layout still shows that deliberate design.
Arawa became the largest town on Bougainville, but it was heavily damaged during the conflict of 1988 to 1998, which began over the mine. Today it is again an important centre for the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. The older settlement of Kieta lies a short distance along the coast, on its own harbour.
An Arawa map poster sets the orderly streets of the planned town against the natural lines of the coast. The shoreline curves along one side, small rivers descend from the mountains, and the road climbing inland toward the mine site cuts a winding path through the hills. It is a compact, balanced composition shaped by both planning and geography.
