Ataşehir lies on the Asian side of Istanbul, inland from Kadıköy and bordered by Ümraniye and Maltepe. It became a district in its own right only in 2008, and its map reflects that recent origin: large planned blocks, wide avenues and clusters of high-rise towers, set among older neighbourhoods with smaller, more irregular streets.
The district is home to the Istanbul Financial Center, a major project designed to bring banking institutions to the city's Anatolian side, and to a skyline of residential and office towers visible across the eastern districts. Major highways run along and through it, making it one of the best-connected parts of the Asian shore.
