Bandipura, usually written Bandipore, is a district town in the Kashmir Valley, on the northern shore of Wular Lake. Wular is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, and its size is clear on any map: a wide, smooth shape that takes up the southern part of the frame, fed by the Jhelum and fringed with marsh and willow plantations.
North of the town, the land rises steeply toward the mountains. The road to the Gurez Valley starts here and climbs over the Razdan Pass, so on the map the street network turns into switchbacks almost as soon as it leaves the shore. The town itself fills the narrow strip between water and slope.
