Barwāh lies on the banks of the Narmada in the Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh. The river is the defining feature of its map. The Narmada runs broad and steady past the town, with ghats and temples along the waterfront, and the older lanes pack tightly behind them. Away from the river, the streets loosen into newer neighbourhoods and then open into cotton and wheat fields across the valley.
The town is a short distance from Omkareshwar, the island temple town on the Narmada that holds one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines. That makes this stretch of the river an important route for pilgrims, and the riverbank at Barwāh is part of that sacred landscape. Low hills of the Vindhya and Satpura ranges frame the valley in the distance.
