Benghazi faces the Mediterranean on the eastern side of the Gulf of Sidra. From above the coastline is the main reference point. The harbour and breakwaters sit near the centre, and shallow lagoons and salt flats reach into the city from the shore. Inland the street network spreads in broad districts and ring roads across flat ground.
Benghazi is Libya's second-largest city and the main centre of the eastern Cyrenaica region. Its history goes back to the Greek colony of Euesperides, later refounded as Berenice. The city was rebuilt many times over the centuries, and the modern layout reflects Italian colonial planning as well as expansion after independence.
