Berchem is a district of Antwerp in Flanders, lying south-east of the historic centre, just outside the ring road that circles the inner city. It was once a separate municipality and became part of Antwerp in 1983. Berchem station, an important rail hub on the line to Brussels, is one of its main landmarks.
On a map, Berchem is dense and varied. Terraced streets fill most of the district in a tight irregular grid, crossed by railway lines that run through on embankments. Along its border with the neighbouring district of Borgerhout lies part of Zurenborg, known for its streets of Art Nouveau and eclectic townhouses, including the Cogels-Osylei.
