Boden lies in Norrbotten, in the far north of Sweden, on the Lule River a short distance inland from Luleå and the Gulf of Bothnia. The river runs broad and slow here, and the town is built along its banks. From above, water dominates the map, with the river curving through the centre and small lakes scattered throughout the surrounding forest.
The town centre sits on the river, with residential districts extending outward, and large areas of military land and woodland beyond. Railway lines converge here, since Boden is a junction on the routes that link northern Sweden.
