Boone lies in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, at an elevation of around 3,300 feet, among the highest towns of its size in the eastern United States. It is named after the frontiersman Daniel Boone. On the map, the town fills a narrow valley, with streets bending around hills and roads climbing out toward the surrounding peaks.
King Street is the historic main street, running through the old downtown. Next to it spreads the campus of Appalachian State University, which shapes much of the town’s life and layout. Residential streets curve along the slopes, while the Blue Ridge Parkway passes nearby. The outdoor drama Horn in the West has been staged here for decades.
