Brisbane is shaped by the Brisbane River, which winds through the city in a series of tight loops before reaching Moreton Bay. From above, the river looks like a ribbon folded back on itself. The central business district sits on one of these bends, almost surrounded by water.
Across the river from the city centre lie South Bank's parklands and the cliffs at Kangaroo Point. The Story Bridge crosses the river nearby, while other bridges link different loops. Streets on the hills follow the terrain, while flatter areas have more regular grids, often lined with traditional timber houses.
To the west, Mount Coot-tha and its forest form a green edge to the suburbs. Downstream, the river passes the port area and flows into Moreton Bay. A Brisbane map poster shows a city that constantly crosses its own river, with bridges and ferries tying the neighbourhoods together.
