Bukit Mertajam is the main town of Central Seberang Perai, on the mainland side of Penang, and it takes its name from the hill that rises beside it. From above, the town is a dense cluster of shophouse streets and markets surrounded by housing estates. To the east the grid stops abruptly against the green mass of Bukit Mertajam hill.
The hill is a forest reserve with hiking trails. The town is also known for St Anne's Church, whose annual feast draws large numbers of pilgrims from across Malaysia. Bukit Mertajam sits on the west coast railway and has long served as a trading centre for the farming and industrial districts of the Penang mainland.
