Changning is one of Shanghai's central districts. It stretches west from the edge of the former French Concession toward Hongqiao. From above it is long and narrow, with Suzhou Creek curving along its northern boundary in a series of tight bends. Between creek and highway, the street pattern shifts from the tree-lined lanes of the east to the broader avenues of the west.
The Yan'an Elevated Road forms a strong east-west axis along the district, and Zhongshan Park provides a large green space. Further west, the Hongqiao area grew into a major business and residential zone, and Gubei is known for its international community. At the district's western end lies Hongqiao International Airport, whose runways cut across the map.

At the western end of the district, the runways and aprons of Hongqiao International Airport form long, clean shapes that close the map on its western side.
