Ciputat lies just beyond the south-western boundary of Jakarta, in the metropolitan belt that has grown rapidly over the past few decades. On a map it is a fine, dense mesh of kampung lanes and housing estates. A few busy arterial roads cut through it, carrying commuters toward the capital, alongside small rivers running north toward the coast.
The area is closely associated with education, above all the campus of the State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah, one of the country's leading Islamic universities. Scattered among the streets are several situ, small reservoir lakes. One of them, Situ Gintung, is remembered for the dam failure in 2009 that caused a deadly flood.
