Tulare Lake bed
The drained lakebed spreads south and west of town as huge fields crossed by levees and channels. It is a reminder of the water that once covered this part of the valley.

Corcoran Map Poster & Print
Corcoran is in Kings County, in the southern San Joaquin Valley, where the land is so flat that surveyors' lines set almost every shape. The town is a small grid of streets laid along a railway line. Around it, square and rectangular fields stretch out in every direction, divided by canals, levees and section roads that run true north-south and east-west.
South and west of town lies the bed of Tulare Lake. It was once one of the largest freshwater lakes in the western United States, then it was drained for agriculture. In wet years the water comes back: during the floods of 2023 the lake reappeared across the farmland and came right up to the levee that protects the town. Corcoran is also widely known for its state prison.
A Corcoran map poster captures a landscape shaped almost entirely by agriculture and water engineering. The town grid is small and orderly, and the fields around it form a larger grid. Canals cut long straight lines between them. In black and white the result is close to abstract, a study in rectangles on some of the flattest ground in California.

Railway-aligned grid
Downtown streets follow the railway that runs through town, so the centre is set at a slight angle to the surrounding farm roads, which follow the compass.
Canals and levees
Irrigation canals and flood levees draw long, thin lines across the countryside. On a monochrome print they look like careful pen strokes between the field blocks.
