Cuxhaven sits at the tip of the Elbe-Weser triangle in Lower Saxony, where the Elbe widens into the North Sea. On a map, the town's harbour basins cut sharply into the shore, and the river's broad shipping channel runs past, carrying vessels to and from Hamburg, about a hundred kilometres upstream.
To the west, the coast gives way to the Wadden Sea, a protected area of tidal flats. At low tide it is possible to walk or ride horse-drawn carriages across them to the island of Neuwerk. The Kugelbake, a wooden navigation beacon at the water's edge, has become the town's emblem.
