Lake Decatur
The reservoir curves through the southern part of the city, a long, winding shape that contrasts with the grid and gives the map its most distinctive feature.

Decatur Map Poster & Print
Decatur lies on the prairie of central Illinois, and its map is a classic Midwestern grid of streets aligned to the compass. On its southern and eastern side, Lake Decatur breaks the pattern, a long reservoir created by damming the Sangamon River in the 1920s. The lake winds through the city with parks and residential streets along its shores.
Decatur has long been a centre for agricultural processing, and it has been called the Soybean Capital of the World. Archer Daniels Midland was based here for decades, and large processing plants and rail yards still mark the east side. Millikin University occupies a campus in the west, and Abraham Lincoln lived in the area as a young man.
A Decatur map poster combines the regular grid, the diagonal rail lines and the long curves of the lake. That combination makes a well-balanced composition, particularly at larger print sizes. It is a portrait of a working prairie city, drawn with the clarity and order that its layout already has.

Prairie grid
Streets run north-south and east-west in a steady pattern, a typical Midwestern layout that fills most of the poster with even blocks.
Rail corridors
Several rail lines cross the city at angles, cutting through the grid and leading to the industrial areas that shaped Decatur's economy.
