Dessie Map Poster & Print
Dessie lies in the Amhara highlands of northern Ethiopia, at a high altitude in a valley enclosed by mountains. From above, the terrain determines the city's shape. The built-up area stretches along the valley floor, and the streets climb only as far as the slopes allow. Beyond that, steep hillsides and ridges surround the city on almost every side.
The main north–south highway, connecting Addis Ababa with the north of the country, runs through Dessie, making it an important stop and trading centre on that route. Most of the city's activity is concentrated along this road and the streets branching off it, and the neighbourhoods extend up the side valleys.
Mapped in clean line work, the city shows a clear central axis with winding lanes spreading uphill. A Dessie map poster conveys a mountain town shaped by a single long valley: dense along the road, sparser on the slopes, and framed by high ground. It is a simple, honest portrait of a highland city.

Hillside streets
On the slopes, the streets bend and climb, and they become sparser with height. The result is a softer, more irregular pattern around the dense centre.
Northern highway
The road linking Addis Ababa with northern Ethiopia passes through Dessie. It is a long through-route at the heart of the town's plan.
