Erromango is the largest island in Vanuatu's southern Tafea Province, lying between Efate to the north and Tanna to the south. From above it is a broad, roughly oval shape with a rugged interior of hills and plateaus, cut by rivers that run down to the sea through steep valleys. Much of that interior is forest with very few roads.
The population is small and lives mostly along the coast, in villages such as Dillon's Bay on the west side and Ipota in the southeast. Much of the island can be reached only on foot or by boat. Its forests include stands of kauri trees, part of which are protected in a dedicated conservation area.
In 1839 the missionary John Williams was killed at Dillon's Bay, an event remembered in the island's history and addressed in a reconciliation ceremony many generations later.
