Central mountain chain
A continuous ridge runs down the length of the island, pushing the main roads out to the coasts. Only a few winding routes cross the interior from one side to the other.

Grande Terre Map Poster & Print
Grande Terre is the main island of New Caledonia, a French territory in the southwest Pacific. It is strikingly elongated, roughly 350 kilometres long and only about 50 to 70 wide, lying on a northwest to southeast axis. A central mountain chain runs almost its whole length and separates a drier, grassier west coast from a steeper, wetter east.
Around the island lies a vast lagoon enclosed by a barrier reef. The lagoons of New Caledonia were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008 for their exceptional reef diversity. Grande Terre is also one of the world's major sources of nickel, and the red, stripped soils of mining areas are visible in many places, particularly in the south.
Nouméa, the capital, spreads across a peninsula of bays and headlands in the southwest and is the only place on the island with a dense street network. A Grande Terre map poster can take in the whole island, showing its remarkable proportions and the reef line offshore. It can also zoom in on the south, where the city meets the lagoon.

Barrier reef
Offshore, a long reef follows the island's outline at a distance. It encloses a wide lagoon and draws a second, finer shoreline around the main landmass.
Nouméa peninsula
The capital occupies an irregular peninsula of bays, marinas and hills in the southwest, where the densest grid of streets on Grande Terre gathers around the water.

Zakaj Grande Terre
Zemljevid, ki nekaj pomeni
Grande Terre belongs to New Caledonians, to families spread between the island and metropolitan France, and to anyone who has driven its coast roads or dived the lagoon. Its shape is unlike any other island, long and deliberate like a brushstroke, and it gives a wall real presence.
Use the title and subtitle for a commune, a family name or a date, and adjust the coordinates line as you wish. Choose from five styles, including Blueprint for the lagoon and Sand for the west coast. Check a free watermarked preview first, then download the $9 HD files or order a matte print.
