Esperantinópolis is a municipality in central Maranhão, in Brazil's north-east, well inland from the state's Atlantic coast. The town itself is compact: a grid of streets around a central area, with roads extending into the surrounding countryside, where farms and small communities are scattered across the land. From above, the urban core stands out as a clear, contained shape.
The name combines esperança, the Portuguese word for hope, with the Greek-derived ending for city, a way of forming names found in many Brazilian towns.
