Estancia sits on the north-eastern coast of Panay in the province of Iloilo. The town looks out over the Visayan Sea, one of the country's most productive fishing grounds. On a map, the settlement is a modest cluster of streets pressed against the shoreline. Small islands lie offshore, and the coast bends into coves and inlets.
Fishing defines the place. Estancia is known as a major fishing port in Western Visayas and is sometimes called the Alaska of the Philippines because of the size of its catch.
