Frascati sits on the northern slopes of the Alban Hills, about twenty kilometres southeast of Rome, and looks straight out over the plain toward the city. From above, the historic centre is a compact knot of streets on the hillside, with roads zigzagging up from the lowland and branching into the countryside above.
The town is the best known of the Castelli Romani and gives its name to Frascati wine, a white wine produced in the vineyards that cover the surrounding slopes. From the late Renaissance, Roman noble families built grand villas here. Villa Aldobrandini, with its terraces and water theatre, still sits above the town centre.
