Gigante stands in the department of Huila in southern Colombia, in the upper valley of the Magdalena River. The town occupies ground between the valley floor and the rising slopes of the Andean cordillera, so its map combines a regular Spanish colonial grid with roads that twist away uphill into farming country.
The centre follows the classic pattern of Colombian towns: a main square with blocks laid out around it in a neat grid. Beyond that core, the land becomes the defining feature. Coffee and other crops cover the slopes, and the rural roads that serve them bend and branch across the hills, while the Magdalena's course marks the valley below.
