Potomac falls
The river narrows and breaks over rock at Great Falls Park, then continues through Mather Gorge. It is the most dramatic stretch of shoreline on the poster.

Great Falls Map Poster & Print
Great Falls is a community in northern Fairfax County, set along the Virginia bank of the Potomac River upstream from Washington. It has no grid and very little dense centre. Instead, roads curve through woodland and follow the lie of the land, and houses sit on large lots, so the map is made of long, looping lines with generous spaces between them.
The river forms the northern edge, and at Great Falls Park it drops over jagged rocks into the narrow Mather Gorge. The same park preserves remains of the Patowmack Canal, an early navigation project backed by George Washington to carry boats around the falls. On a map the gorge and the canal traces add sharp detail to the riverbank.
Georgetown Pike, a historic route, runs through the area and ties its winding roads together near a small village centre. A Great Falls map poster captures the character of the place from above: an irregular web of lanes, streams feeding the Potomac, and a river edge that turns suddenly from calm water to rock and rapids.

Patowmack Canal
Traces of the eighteenth-century canal built to bypass the falls survive in the park, a small but historic line running beside the river.
Winding lanes
Roads loop and curve around woods, streams and large lots, producing an open, organic street pattern quite unlike the grids of many nearby suburbs.

Zemljevid, ki nekaj pomeni
