Helmstedt is a town in eastern Lower Saxony, between the wooded Elm hills and the former border with East Germany. It was home to the University of Helmstedt from 1576 until 1810, and its main building, the Juleum, still stands in the old town as a reminder of that period.
From above, the historic centre forms a compact, rounded shape of narrow streets, surrounded by a ring of green where the old fortifications once were. Later districts spread outward, and to the east the landscape has been reshaped by decades of lignite mining.
During the Cold War, the nearby Helmstedt-Marienborn crossing was the most important road border crossing between West and East Germany. A Helmstedt map poster shows a town where medieval, academic and twentieth-century history all left clear marks on the street pattern.
