Jiaxing sits on the flat, water-rich plain of northern Zhejiang, roughly between Shanghai and Hangzhou. From above, it is defined by water. Canals ring the old centre, rivers branch through the districts, and the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal passes through the city on its way south. Almost every block is bordered by a waterway.
South Lake, just south-east of the old town, is the city's best-known landmark. In 1921 the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party finished its meetings on a boat on this lake, and a replica of that boat is moored there today. A Jiaxing map poster shows the lake as an irregular shape set into the grid, with small islands and causeways.
The surrounding prefecture includes the historic water towns of Wuzhen and Xitang, known for canal-side houses and stone bridges. Jiaxing is also known across China for zongzi, the sticky rice dumplings wrapped in leaves. Modern districts and high-speed rail lines now surround the older centre, but the waterways remain the strongest element of the plan.

The ancient Grand Canal passes through the city, together with several other canals. Their long curving lines connect Jiaxing to the wider waterway network of the Yangtze delta.
