Lattes lies just south of Montpellier in Occitanie, on the low land between the city and the Mediterranean lagoons. It is an old place: the ancient port settlement of Lattara stood here, and its excavated remains are presented in the site museum. Today the town is part of the Montpellier metropolitan area.
From above, Lattes combines several very different textures. The Lez river runs through it toward the sea, and to the south lie shallow lagoons and wetlands. The modern Port Ariane district forms a curved, planned quarter around a marina basin, while residential areas and roads connect the town to Montpellier to the north.
