Mandera sits at the far north-eastern tip of Kenya, where the borders of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia meet. The Daua River runs along the northern edge of the area and forms the boundary with Ethiopia. It is a thin, winding line of water and green in otherwise very dry land, and from above it is the most noticeable natural feature.
The town is laid out on flat semi-arid ground. Its streets are wide, straight and mostly unpaved, set in loose blocks of compounds and markets, and the built-up area sits close to settlements across the borders. As the headquarters of Mandera County, it is an administrative and trading centre for a large pastoral region.
