Mangbang is a town in the Tengchong area of western Yunnan, in the mountainous country between the Gaoligong range and the border with Myanmar. On a map the settlement sits on a valley floor, with its streets following the valley and roads threading outward along streams and hillsides. Around it the terrain is steep and folded.
The Tengchong region is known for its volcanic landscape and hot springs, and for its long history as a trading post on routes between China and Southeast Asia. The farmland around towns like Mangbang is often terraced into the slopes, and the valley floors are used for rice and other crops.
