Jianshui lies in a basin in southern Yunnan, in the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, and its old town is one of the best preserved in the province. On a map the historic core forms a compact, roughly rectangular area of tight lanes and courtyard houses, with the modern town spreading around it in wider streets and larger blocks.
The old east gate, Chaoyang Tower, dates from the late fourteenth century and still stands at the head of the main street. Nearby, the Confucian Temple, one of the largest in China, is set around a broad pond called Xuehai, the sea of learning. The Zhu Family Garden, a sprawling complex of courtyards, also lies within the old town.
Outside the town, the Double Dragon Bridge spans the meeting of two rivers with seventeen arches, and the area is known for its purple clay pottery.
