Yuxi lies about ninety kilometres south of Kunming, in a highland basin of central Yunnan. The urban core, Hongta district, fills the flat valley floor, and the surrounding mountains hold it in place. The map therefore shows a compact city with a clear outline rather than endless sprawl. Most streets are broad and straight, typical of a city largely rebuilt in recent decades.
In China, Yuxi is best known as the home of Hongta, one of the country's largest tobacco companies, which shares its name with the central district. The wider prefecture includes Fuxian Lake, one of the deepest freshwater lakes in China. It also includes the Chengjiang fossil site, recognised by UNESCO for its exceptionally preserved early Cambrian animals.
