Kunming sits at around 1,900 metres on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau, beside Dian Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the province. The city spreads north and east from the lakeshore, and on the map the water fills the southwest as a broad, elongated shape, with the Western Hills climbing sharply along its opposite bank.
Its mild weather throughout the year gave Kunming the name Spring City. Near the centre, Green Lake Park forms a small, intricate pattern of ponds, causeways and islands close to Yunnan University, and in winter it is known for the black-headed gulls that gather there. The older streets around it are dense and irregular, while newer districts follow wider grids.
