Finger canal network
Dozens of dredged canals run between residential streets, giving the island its comb-like pattern and putting boat access at the back door of most homes.

Marco Island Map Poster & Print
Marco Island is the largest and northernmost of the Ten Thousand Islands off Florida's southwest coast. From above, it looks unlike most towns. Long residential streets are separated by straight, parallel canals, so almost every lot backs onto water. The western edge is a smooth arc of Gulf of Mexico beach, and the eastern and southern sides break up into mangrove islets and tidal channels.
The island's modern layout comes from large-scale development in the 1960s, when the canal network was dredged to create waterfront home sites. Long before that, Marco was home to the Calusa people. Excavations here in the 1890s uncovered remarkably preserved wooden artefacts, including the carved figure known as the Key Marco Cat, which is now one of the best-known pieces of pre-Columbian art in Florida.
A Marco Island map poster turns this pattern of land and water into an almost graphic design. Rows of canals read like combs, bridges tie the island to the mainland, and the open Gulf fills one side of the frame. It is a place where the coastline does most of the drawing, and the print shows that clearly.

Gulf beachfront
The western shore curves along the Gulf of Mexico in a long, smooth line. On the map it contrasts sharply with the fragmented edges on the landward side.
Ten Thousand Islands
To the south and east, the island breaks into mangrove keys and winding passes. Together they form the start of a vast coastal wilderness that continues toward the Everglades.
