Melchor Ocampo lies in the State of México, in the northern part of the Valley of Mexico beyond the edge of Mexico City's continuous urban area. On a map the town centre forms a compact grid around its main square and church, while the surrounding land shows a mix of fields, irrigation canals and growing residential neighbourhoods.
The municipality is named after Melchor Ocampo, the nineteenth-century liberal politician associated with the Reform era, and it lies close to Cuautitlán and Tultepec.
