Walled old town
Long sections of the medieval wall, with towers and gates, still enclose the historic centre, whose outline appears on the map as a compact, clearly bounded core.

Memmingen Map Poster & Print
Memmingen lies in the Bavarian part of Swabia, close to the Iller valley and the border with Baden-Württemberg, on the northern edge of the Allgäu. The map shows a remarkably well-defined old town, still partly enclosed by medieval walls, towers and gates, with a web of narrow streets inside and larger modern districts spreading around it.
For centuries Memmingen was a free imperial city, answerable only to the emperor. In 1525, during the German Peasants' War, the Twelve Articles were drawn up here, a list of demands often described as one of the earliest written statements of liberty in Europe. Today the town is also known for its regional airport, which serves much of southern Germany.
A Memmingen map poster rewards close reading. The old town forms a dense, compact core, its streets crossed by the small channels of the Stadtbach running through the centre, while the ring of later streets and green spaces around it shows clearly where the fortifications once stood.

Stadtbach channels
Small streams run through the old town in narrow open channels, adding thin, winding lines of water between the houses and along the streets.
Market squares
The centre opens into several squares, including the marketplace by the town hall, which appear as pale clearings within the dense street pattern.
