Murter lies close to the coast of central Dalmatia, between Šibenik and Zadar, and is linked to the mainland by a short bridge at Tisno. From above it is long and narrow, with a hilly spine, olive groves and pine woods, and a coastline of shallow bays. The island faces a scatter of smaller islets and, beyond them, the open sea towards the Kornati.
Four settlements give the island its street pattern: Tisno at the bridge, Jezera and Betina along the shores, and the village of Murter at the northwestern end. Each is a compact knot of stone houses and lanes around a small harbour, joined by a road running along the island. Betina has a long tradition of wooden boatbuilding.
