Ndera is a sector in the Gasabo district on the eastern edge of Kigali, Rwanda's capital. On a map, the terrain explains almost everything. Roads follow the ridgelines, housing spreads along the slopes, and the valley floors stay mostly open as wetland and farmland. The street pattern isn't a grid. It traces the shape of the hills.
Rwanda is often called the land of a thousand hills, and Kigali shows why. The city is spread over a series of ridges separated by marshy valleys, and outer areas such as Ndera show that relief especially clearly.
