Compact town grid
The urban area is a small, orderly block of streets on higher ground. It contrasts sharply with the loose, organic forms of the surrounding wetlands.

Penalva Map Poster & Print
Penalva lies in the Baixada Maranhense, the wide lowland west of São Luís in northern Brazil. The country here is flat and low, and in the rainy season large parts of it flood into shallow lakes and marshy fields. From above, the town is a modest grid of streets on firmer ground. Around it the surrounding land is broken by irregular water bodies and meandering channels.
Life in the region follows the rhythm of the waters, which rise and fall with the seasons. Fishing and small-scale farming have long been part of local life, and the town serves as a centre for the rural communities around it. Roads here are few and deliberate, because they have to thread their way between wetland and lake.
A Penalva map poster keeps the town's grid small and precise at the centre and leaves generous space for the water around it. The result is a quiet, open composition. It suits the landscape well, a place defined as much by lakes and floodplain as by streets and buildings.

Seasonal lakes
Shallow lakes and floodplains lie around the town. On the map they appear as broad, irregular shapes that give the print much of its character.
Lowland roads
A few roads link Penalva to neighbouring towns. They cross the flat terrain in long, sparse lines that pick their way between the areas of water.
