The city lies where the Texas Hill Country meets the flatter Blackland Prairie, and its map reflects that edge: hillier, curving streets to the west, and straighter roads and farmland to the east. The highway cuts through the city in a long diagonal.
The San Marcos River rises from springs at Spring Lake, on the north side of town, and flows through the centre in a clear, green corridor lined with parks. Just above it, Texas State University spreads across a hillside campus, its buildings, stairs and paths forming a dense, irregular block on the map next to the older downtown square.
